When you think about glow sticks, the first thoughts that come to mind are probably concerts, nightclubs or kids’ sleepovers. However, most survivalists and outdoor enthusiasts will tell you that these pieces of equipment can actually be an invaluable addition to your preparedness kit. Also known as light sticks, glow sticks are usually made from a plastic tube or sheath that contains a mix of chemicals. They light up by bending the sheath to crack the capsules contained inside that hold the chemicals separately from one another, and then you shake them up to mix the contents, resulting in a chemical reaction that emits energy. This process is known as chemoluminescence.
